Traveling can be all fun and games, very literally, until somebody gets a headache. Headaches can knock you down and make you feel terrible. But, these things do happen, even on trips. Quick action can help quell the pain and get them feeling better in no time flat. Here are five ways to get rid of a headache quickly.
Try A Cold/Hot Compress
Depending on the type of headache that you have, you have different options on how to treat it. If you feel like your headache is more of a migraine-type, you may benefit from lying down with a cold compress on your head. If you have a tension headache, which you feel more in the back of the neck, a hot compress on the back of the neck can make a difference in how you feel. If you have a pharmacy local where you are staying, certain companies make heat wraps that you can wear on the go.
Practice Breathing Techniques
When you focus deeply on one thing, especially your breathing, you are able to almost forget about your headache. Breathing nice deep breaths, in and out, can actually help to relieve tension headaches. If you have one or feel one coming on, try to visit a quiet spot, or take a moment in your hotel room to relax. Breathing in and out can help reduce muscle tightness, which can sometimes be a cause of headaches.
Dim The Lights and Meditate
If you are at your hotel, taking the lighting down a couple of notches may help with a headache. Oftentimes, light can exacerbate a headache, making it worse. By dimming them and taking a small rest (even just sitting down in a chair) you might feel relief in minutes. Meditating is something that can also help with headaches.
Hydrate
This cannot be overstated. Making certain that you stay hydrated, especially when you are on a trip can make or break a vacation. Dehydration can make somebody sick in more ways than one, commonly causing headaches as a first indication. If you have a headache, try drinking a large glass of water and see if you begin to feel better. Even if you do not have a headache, make sure that you and everyone else in your group are doing the same to avoid sickness.
Self-Massage
By massaging certain areas around your neck and head, you can help to ease some of the tension that you may be feeling. For example, taking a few minutes to massage the back of your neck or shoulders can help a tension headache. You can also massage your temples and even your scalp to try and help reduce any headache pain.
